What is the Digital Screen Network?

The Digital Screen Network is a £12 million scheme, funded by the National Lottery, It has installed 240 screens in 212 cinemas with state of the art digital projection facilities. As a result, cinema-goers will be able to enjoy a far wider range of films at their local cinema and facilities for people with hearing or sight impairments will be greatly expanded.

In return for the new technology, cinemas will show more specialised films including British films such as Control and Joe Strummer: The Future is Unwritten; critically acclaimed independent films such as Black Gold; classics including Casablanca; and the best of world cinema such as The Lives of Others

In 2005, around £300 million was spent on distributing and marketing all cinema releases in the UK but only £18 million, or 6%, was spent on specialised films. The introduction of digital distribution will mean that films such as these will reach around 30 million people throughout the UK with an increase in specialised film screenings of up to 75,000 in the first year alone, rising to 165,000 in four years from now. The overall number of cinema visits in the UK could be raised by up to 4 million thanks to the more diverse range of films available to audiences

What other support have you given to cinemas?

The UK Film Council has offered a number of other schemes to assist cinema.

In 2003, we invested £350,000 in our 3-year Cinema Access Programme – to help cinemas purchase subtitling and audio-description technologies that improve the cinema-going experience for people with hearing and sight impairments.  Today, around 230 cinemas have specialist viewing equipment and it is routinely installed in new cinemas.  The Cinema Access Programme also provided funds to YourLocalCinema.com (a site listing access-friendly screenings in the UK) and the ongoing funding initiative, the Film Print Provision strand, to help distributors produce fully accessible film prints. Yourlocalcinema.com contiunes to be funded by our Diversity Dept and has become the film listings website of choice for film-goers with sensory impairments.

In 2006 we allocated £800,000 through our Small Capital Fund to help smaller cinemas meet the costs of essential building refurbishments and other improvements such as disabled access.

In 2007 we made £500,000 available in 2007 through our Capital and Access Fund for Cinemas to help cinemas upgrade their equipment and premises to improve the cinema-going experience particularly for film goers with sensory impairments.
