Introduction

The case studies here, presented to you here by the European Film Agency Directors (EFADs), are its contribution to celebrate the European Parliament's 2008 Year of Intercultural Dialogue.

The Year of Intercultural Dialogue aims to celebrate the growing diversity of cultural identity and expression within Europe, to build bridges between communities and stimulate a richer set of connections between European cultures and cultures outside Europe.

EFADs is an informal network of Europe's national film agencies, all of which are actively involved in fostering cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue in different ways, through film.

Why do we think this project it is important?

Europe is in the grip of unprecedented demographic change. In this context the temptation for each culture or sub-culture to see the others as strangers and to cultivate its own self-interest in isolation is a growing challenge. It can only be addressed through a deliberate effort to build bridges between cultural groups and foster common values such as curiosity, tolerance and equality before the law.

European Cinema – a powerful medium

Notions like cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue escape attempts at easy two-dimensional definitions. They can best be grasped through experiences which speak to the emotions as well as the mind. At its best, the medium of film provides such a multi-dimensional experience.

Within European cinema and its connection to cultures beyond Europe, the notions cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue can only be captured through a kaleidoscope of perspectives, aesthetic choices and initiatives. Invariably, the dialogue between cultures through the medium of film results from individual vision backed up by private enterprise and public institutions such as Europe's national film agencies.

Europe's national film agencies, each in its own way, are committed to a consistent, ongoing partnership with European film talent, enterprise and audiences in ensuring the growth of an intercultural dialogue, between demographic bands, religious creeds and social groups, and across the North/South divide, responsible for so much of Europe's immigration 'hotspots'.
