Specialised films
This section is intended for use by exhibitors participating in the Digital Screen Network.
It serves as a guide to the upcoming and already released films which have been categorised as Specialised and eligible to contribute towards the participating cinemas' programming quotas. The contents may be searched and sorted by title, release date and distributor using the search box at the foot of the list page. When you enter the page, you will see the most recent additions at the top.
Please note that although release dates are kept as up to date as possible, the BFI takes no responsibility for the accuracy of this information and it is always advisable to check this with the distributor if in any doubt.
We maintain a Specialised films database for all specialised films released in the UK from the second half of 2004 onwards and is continuously updated with upcoming releases on a regular basis.
There are many more Specialised films released prior to 2000 that cannot be listed here. Furthermore, repertory programming of classic Hollywood or British films (e.g. Casablanca, The Big Red One, The Adventures of Robin Hood) would also generally qualify.
For enquiries regarding the eligibility of specific titles or if you are distributing a film that you think may qualify please email.
Definition of specialised film
The BFI's definition of specialised film is quite broad and relates to films that do not sit easily within a mainstream and highly commercial genre. For a more detailed explanation of the criteria used when determining this list please
